You might think that most people would know their preferred compensation, but 4 out of 5 salaried workers cannot name a specific package. It can be a complicated issue for sure and the more senior the position, the more complex a remuneration package can get, so while coming up with exact numbers can be a challenge, I encourage my clients to identify a definite range, starting with the minimum acceptable and extend that range to the upper limits of what you believe the market will pay. That range can be pretty wide especially when modern packages are made up of so many different parts (salary, KPI bonuses, commissions, profit-sharing, stock options/grants, company car, other allowances & perks and a number of other elements), and again, the more senior the role, the wider the range will probably be. However, it will serve you well to put effort into this to identify and monitor YOUR own preferred compensation range -- whether or not you are currently looking for a job.
