MAKE things happen rather than watch them happen!
I hear people all the time and I am quite sure you have heard them too, blaming the government, their schoolteachers, their parents, society at large or that kid who, when you were both 14 years old, stole your homework and went on to become CEO of the world?s 18th largest company.
It?s never themselves, always someone else.
There?s always someone else upon whom the blame can legitimately be placed too.
You hear the story and you too become convinced that if only ........ then ........
This is what?s called a victim mentality.
To make anything happen however, you need to shed that mindset and adopt much more of a take-charge mentality.
Be a VICTOR, not a victim!
Fact is, whatever has happened in the past, however reasonable your grievance is, however justified you feel, it has gone, and your first task is to let it go.
Let it go completely!
The fact that yesterday (or today) you were a superstar on a jet-stream to the highest corporate levels, means almost nothing about what direction you will be heading tomorrow.
Things are changing.
Today you?re only as good as your last achievement.
Tomorrow?s world will mean that you?re only as good as your next achievement - yes, the one that hasn?t happened yet.
The one you are part way through and if you look like you?re not making the grade, you might be history.
Incredible?
Disturbing?
This SHOULD disturb you and you may find it hard to believe, but I can tell you it is the way of the future.
Never mind future.
It is the way of the PRESENT.
And then, as if to show/remind us how turbulent the situation can be, along came covid-19.
Not just in terms of human health and mortality figures, but also in the job market, with entire industries at a standstill and millions of people affected.
In short, the era of old-style job security is dead!
However, it need not be all bad news.
In fact, in many economies, the threat to some is an opportunity to others.
The same changes that create the job losses of a bank teller role will create jobs for software engineers who help to create new ways to transfer funds, withdraw cash from ATM?s etc. or even create new forms of ?money? as some FinTech?s are exploring.
It is clear that there are many great opportunities ahead for those who pay attention to what is going on and position themselves accordingly.
Many companies are starting up or pivoting from sunset industries to sunrise activities.
Nobody knows with any certainty who will win in future.
Some of these new ventures will succeed; some will fail, but for sure, employees and job-hunters simply cannot afford to just sit on their hands and watch from the sidelines.
There is always great opportunity when there is great change.
So be proactive and increase your chances of being on the winning side.
Of course, there?s much more to these themes than I can include in this article but stay tuned for future blogposts here.
